diann, how does calendula do here? i grew it one year from seed, but it has never returned. love to know if i can do something for it. i know it is a cool season herb. what made the society choose it for herb of the year?
Tina, Calendula does get a little droopy in the heat of the summer, but it freshens up in the fall. The horrible heat/drought of last year did not kill mine, but it didn’t do it any good. I was surprised to see it perk up in October. It may reseed itself, but you probably need to replant each year. I am starting seeds now and will have several varities available this spring. The International Herb Association takes nominations for the Herb of the Year from members and evaluates the recommendations based on versatility of use, availibility, and ease of growing.
